BRIEF HISTORY OF THE INSTITUTION

Education towards empowerment of Women :

It started off with a humble beginning way back in 1955 by virtue of Philanthropic act by the sisters of Holy Cross Convent, Thoothukudi to impart education to children hailing in Thoothukudi. It transformed in to a Holy Cross Home Science Academy in 1966 and finally in to Holy Cross Home Science College in 1975.
This academy trains young girls for an ideal family life and to live as better citizens. They were taught

Human Development, Textiles, Food & Nutrition, Cookery, Home Management etc.

It was affiliated to the University of Madras in 1975. B.Sc., Degree in Home Science was started under and later in 1990, it was affiliated to Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli.

A nursery school with in the campus provides facilities to learn the psychological, emotional and social changes that occur during their pre-school period. This forms a part of curriculum as a Human Development for the UG students of Food Science and Nutrition.

The first batch of college students came out creditably in November 1975. Thanks to the efforts taken by Sr. Phyllis, former Principal who worked tirelessly. The P.G. Diploma Course in Nutrition, Food Service Management and Dietetics (NFSMD) was started in 1994.

To cater to the growing needs of the student community our Provincial Rev.Sr.Pushpam Irudayam and her team provided us financial backup to commence new courses and also to construct new blocks. The students and staff continue to remember them with gratitude for the support offered to our institution to begin a new span of life.

It is also aimed at intellectual Vigor, love and respect to others. The institution gives special consideration to students coming from economically & socially disadvantaged communities and the first generation learners.

The college has been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with B grade during the academic year 2008-2009.

It is also quick to admit the challenges of new technological advancements of the era including new subjects such as B.Sc. (Fashion Designing) and B.Com (Computer Application) followed by B.Sc Computer Science. The College was accredited with ‘B’ Grade by NAAC in the year 2009, this year it has been introduced B.A., English. The Holy Cross Home Science College offers these courses streamlined by leading academicians & subject experts. The courses are an ideal platform for the students and the subjects benchmarking with the latest contents & teaching methodologies for the launch of one’s career.

These innovations are aimed at motivating students to a certain new avenues in their respective fields & making learning an exciting and joyful experience. Our institution provides the best mix of practical & theory to ensure your success.

In the beginning of every academic year, the college conducts orientation programmes for newly admitted students (fresher’s) & their parents to acquaint them with the college ambience, CBCS, subjects, exam-evaluation process, co-curricular, extra- curricular activities etc.,

The College is also offering Two year Post Graduate Degree course in M.Sc., Dietetics & Food Service Management in distance education since 2005.
